The Cayuga duck traces its roots to a small flock acquired in Orange County, New York, by John S. Clark, who brought the birds to Cayuga County in the Finger Lakes region around 1840. Both the ducks and the county take their name from the Cayuga, the Indigenous people of that land. The breed flourished locally and earned recognition from the American Poultry Association, which admitted it into the Standard of Perfection in 1874. With duck a staple on Northeastern city menus, Cayugas were soon raised in great numbers on New York duck farms. Their fortunes turned in the 1890s, however, as commercial producers shifted to the faster-growing, white-feathered Pekin — a change that sent the Cayuga into a long decline. Today the breed is listed as a Watch Status by the Livestock Conservancy.

We have an Excellent Male to Female Ratios, nice young flock with deep rich beetle green sheen. Some hues of purple when the sunlight hits just right.

EGG COLORS WILL VARY. NOT EVERY CAYUGA WILL LAY BLACK EGGS. (reference picture in listing) The bloom color varies as they lay through season, especially with new layers. Egg Color does not predict color or quality of the Duckling for that matter. Some can be black or minty to muddy greenish color , while others can be a slate or almost white egg. Their bloom color does not affect the quality of the chicks.

Eggs are gathered several times a day and stored appropriately. I ship eggs out at the first part of the week unless other arrangements are made. This is to prevent them from sitting in a warehouse or mail truck over the weekend.

Once the eggs leave our farm, I cannot control shipping conditions, weather, historic events, handling procedures, incubator settings, or your children playing with the eggs once they arrive. For those reasons and many many more environmental factors that affect embryo development, we cannot guarantee hatch rates, and we do not give refunds.
