I like to call them Wedding Geese but their rightful name is Sebastopol. Sebastopol are our most unique appearing goose. You would think that a bird such as this would have been bred fairly recently but actually they have been around for hundreds of years.
Their origin is thought to be from the countries surrounding the Black Sea, Hungary and the Balkans. They were known early on in England as Danubian and the Spanish and Italians referred to the breed as Danubio due to importations from the lower Danube river area. How they got the name Sebastopol is a mystery other than some of the first birds may have been imported from the port of Sebastopol.
They are listed on the Livestock Conservancy. Beautiful and chatty. No aggression has been seen in my flock. They do get hissy around breeding season, typically the end of February. This breed does well in kiddie pools . From what I learned they don’t particularly care too much for big water or very large ponds . As their feathers do not lay flat, their feathers do not insulate them as well as other breeds. Wind easily fluffs their feathers and any heat held by the feather is quickly lost. So in very cold weather they will spend more time inside than other breeds.
Fertility seems to be a problem with most Sebastopols, along with lower than normal egg production. Fertility is adequate early in the season (and they do seem to come into production earlier than most breeds) but quickly drops off. They are also more difficult to incubate and hatch compared to other breeds. So unless you are very experienced or have a very good incubator like the Brinsea I would highly recommend spending the extra money to just purchase the goslings .
Sebastapol geese don’t really make great mothers until the goslings become a certain age. Unfortunately they get stepped on or squashed when they are left with the flock. I’ve also had goslings drown in a bucket of water. It is best to raise them for a few weeks until they are stronger and when they’re feathers start coming in. Once introduced to the flock they are very social and very protective of each other.
Please join Facebook groups to learn more about this breed before you purchase them . I feed them Kalmbach Duck and Goose and grind it up in my Vitamix machine for 2-3 weeks.
Sometimes I will also mix it with flock maintainer.
This breed is prone to wing problems. To prevent angel wing I will feed the Kalmbach 16% all flock maintainer and start feeding this around 3 weeks.
I DNA sex all goslings hatched here. They are then wing banded and recorded.
Please Note : I have a total of 10 Sebastapol geese. 🪿
3 males and 7 females
Included into that total : I have TWO SMOOTH feathered females included in my flock that are with full curly males. The smooth feathered females are said to help improve feathers and angel wing. So there is a chance of getting smooth. All of my geese have blue eyes.
